Digital Mammography Equipment Now In Use at Margaretville Hospital<\/h2>\n

Margaretville<\/strong> \u2013 Margaretville Hospital is now utilizing state-of-the-art digital
\nmammography equipment.<\/p>\n

The new digital mammography system was placed in service on November 12,\u00a0following a 10-day period for installation and staff training. The equipment has received\u00a0certification from the American College of Radiology.<\/p>\n

The new Hologics equipment enables Margaretville Hospital to provide services that\u00a0are \u201cthe standard of care for breast imaging,\u201d explained Director of Radiology Tony\u00a0Allen.<\/p>\n

He pointed out that the digital mammography equipment provides the highest quality\u00a0images and offers shorter exam times.<\/p>\n

The results of this testing are also faster. Mr. Allen said the average turnaround time for\u00a0results from the previous equipment was five days. Now exam results are available within\u00a024-48 hours.<\/p>\n

Mr. Allen noted that the exam procedure is essentially the same, but \u201cthe acquisition\u00a0and transmission of images is different.\u201d<\/p>\n

Margaretville Hospital is a member of HealthAlliance of Hudson Valley, an affiliation\u00a0that includes Kingston and Benedictine hospitals. Margaretville previously would send\u00a0mammogram films to Kingston by courier where they would be read by a radiologist.\u00a0With the digital system, exam results are sent immediately to the radiologist via the\u00a0Internet.<\/p>\n

Mr. Allen added, \u201cThis is technology that is not normally available in a small, rural\u00a0hospital. The system works in conjunction with the R-2 checker that will scan the film\u00a0and will put marks on the film where it feels there may be changes in the breast. It can\u00a0bring subtle changes to the radiologists\u2019 attention that the eye may not pick up as\u00a0quickly.\u201d<\/p>\n

He continued, \u201cThe key is early detection \u2013 to notice changes early and begin treatment\u00a0and stop the spread of the cancer,\u201d Mr. Allen stated. \u201cThe patient may not feel the lump\u00a0and the digital exam can pick up problems earlier.\u201d<\/p>\n

He pointed out that great strides have been made in breast cancer awareness programs\u00a0and these have resulted in a vast improvement in cancer survival rates.<\/p>\n

\u201cFifteen or 20 years ago, breast cancer awareness was in its infancy. Now, people are\u00a0well aware of what\u2019s best for women\u2019s health and this work has been very successful in\u00a0prevention and treatment of the disease,\u201d Mr. Allen stated.<\/p>\n

Grant funded<\/strong><\/p>\n

The digital mammography equipment, including a printer, was purchased through a\u00a0$202,000 Rural Access Grant that the hospital applied for nearly a year ago.\u00a0Hospital Chief Executive Officer Ed Morache said that the hospital demonstrated a\u00a0need for such equipment and this fact was recognized with the grant award.\u00a0He pointed out that digital mammography services are the first step in the creation of a\u00a0Women\u2019s Health Center that will be set up when the hospital begins renovations to its\u00a0Emergency Department next month. The Women\u2019s Health Center section will include\u00a0testing equipment and an education room.<\/p>\n

Mr. Morache added, \u201cThis is an important piece of equipment. It\u2019s another example of\u00a0Margaretville Hospital and the HealthAlliance being proactive in maintaining high\u00a0standards of care for the community. We feel that by bringing this into our neighborhood,\u00a0more people can take advantage of it.\u201d<\/p>\n
